The Lake Express on Lake Michigan

The West Michigan Strategic Alliance (WMSA) was formally organized in June 2000 by a diverse group of community leaders from the greater Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon areas concerned about the effects of rapid population growth and urbanization on the region's quality of life.  Over the next two-years, WMSA brought together hundreds of businesses, governmental units and institutions in our seven county (Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Muskegon, Newaygo and Ottawa) region to address common issues and recognize the benefits of adopting an interdependent plan for collaborative action.

In 2002, WMSA published The Common Framework: Information and Maps for Decision Makers, a sourcebook that uses innovative geographic information system technologies to create a "common framework" document that clearly depicts how the communities in the region are connected.  Intended as a tool for decision-makers, The Common Framework identified six Priorities for Regional Collaboration (PRC) and has been the foundation for the many partnerships fostered by WMSA to date.
